Ngā tohu o te huarere: Conversations beyond human scales conference

A visual identity and materials for the Ngā tohu o te huarere: Conversations beyond human scales conference for the Association for the Study of Literature, Environment and Culture, Australia + New Zealand.

This was a minimal budget, quick turnaround project. I used a systematic grid and open source typefaces with imagery that put me in mind of the differing timescales of humans and the cosmos.

The Sierpinski triangle became a useful shorthand motif for the scaling in and zooming out quality of thinking about space + time. The photographs (mostly my own) use the triangle and intersect it with images where human intervention and nature's timescales are visible: the moon behind the once-Utopian (now demolished) George Porter Towers; a shipwreck being taken back by the waves; birds flying through pylons; a person as a ghostly figure in a limestone cave millions of years in the making…
