The term scientism generally points to the cosmetic application of science in unwarranted situations not amenable to application of the scientific method or similar scientific standards.

But it's more than this. Philosopher Tom Sorell offers a more precise definition: 'Scientism is a matter of putting too high a value on natural science in comparison with other branches of learning or culture.'
